I’m Cas, queer artist and writer, and I’m raising money to return to western Massachussetts near where I went to college, and to begin living there permanently.
I went to Smith College until I graduated this past May. In Northampton and the surrounding area I found a place that felt more like home than any house I have lived in, any place I have visited. I had friends, a community, and my surroundings (by which I mean, Northampton and other towns in the area) were exactly the sort of place I had dreamed of living in my whole life. I felt like I had found a place that called out to my very soul. I intended to stay in western MA after graduation, but did not find employment in time to do so, and had to return to a family I knew would cause me immense emotional suffering.
I currently live in my mother’s house in New Jersey, and my “home life” is unstable at best. My mother’s moods are unpredictable, but her tendency to take out her anger on me is a constant. The appearance of other close family results inevitably in shouting matches between them and my mother over financial troubles that I was never involved in but am expected to resolve along with them. It has been this way since I was young, and the constant fighting has left me with a handful of trauma-related mental illnesses, which worsen the longer I am here. I work part-time, in the hopes of saving enough money to leave, but it isn’t happening fast enough.
I am desperate to go back to Massachussetts. In the six months I have been home, my mental state has declined from difficult but workable to every day being a battle that I don’t believe I can win, and my health insurance is not taken by any therapists in my area. My family being what it is, and without any friends left in the area, I have no support system here, whereas I have friends waiting for me in Massachussetts.
My goal is to move by January 2017. I currently have enough saved to cover moving costs, but not enough for rent and food after that. I am asking for enough to cover these expenses for my first three to four months on my own in Massachussetts. Any amount you can give puts a big smile on my face.
